A Bad Day at the Office

It has been suggested to me that some fans would like to learn of some of the ignominious defeats suffered by the club. Who knows why, but here are five of the blackest days, three of which I can recall having been there, and two I am glad I missed.

Jan 10 2004 Home  0-4 v Spartans Scottish Cup

Dec 18 1993 Away 0-6 v QoS Scottish League Div 2

Aug 25 1993 Home 1-9 Celtic League Cup

Dec 22 1984 Away 1-7 v Stranraer Scottish League Div

Jan 3 1977 Away 1-8 v Clydebank Scottish League Div 1

These match results send a cold shiver down my spine when I recall them, for different reasons.

Arbroath 0-4 Spartans.

What a disastrous day this was, and so recent that every fan will remember and cringe at the thought of it. The match started off brightly and John McGlashan headed the lichties in front after 9minutes,

and we waited for the floodgates to open, and they did, but at the wrong end. By half time we were 2-1 down and by the end it was 4-1 going on eight. All the credit in this match went to Spartans, and deservedly so.

QOS 6-0 Arbroath.

I recall a very dreich day at Palmerston, we were sitting in the stand with 9 minutes played, and we were 3-0 down. If we hadn't been on the supporters bus I would have left then!

Tommy Bryce,

A young Tommy Bryce

who would later play for Arbroath had scored a hat trick in 2minutes 45 seconds. Danny McGrain's bearded army were well and truly scalped that day.

Arbroath 1-9 Celtic.

Arbroath, managed by ex Celt Danny McGrain met a side who were playing second fiddle to a rampant Rangers outfit at this time, and needed a minnow to take out their frustration on. Enter the lambs (lichties) to the slaughter. It only took the 'tic 5 minutes to open their account through Nicholas. Further goals came from McGinlay 24mins, Frank ( where's the burds) McAvennie 25, 52, and 64 mins, Payton 38, 57 and 88 mins, McNally 61 minutes. The solitary home counter came from Tindal right on full time.

A Celtic miss ! McGinlay shot across the face of goal

No favours from Liam Brady's side to a Celtic legend.

Stranraer 7-1 Arbroath.

I am very glad I didn't make this trip, as a trip to Stranraer is a daunting journey, but to go there and see this defeat would probably have resulted in me giving up with football. For those of you who have never been there, it's like traveling to the ends of the earth, and then some. As to the goals Tommy Bryce got 3 ( yes him again) Knox, McGuire and Logan 1 each and an own goal completed the Blues complement, with Rod Brown ( who the #### is Brown) counting for the lichties.

Clydebank 8-1 Arbroath.

Another I missed ( Phew). The Guide report states that "The match ended as a contest within the first 20 minutes, when the maroons were hit with three goals in as many minutes". For the record the goals were scored by Cooper ( 16, 48 and 62 mins.) MacCallan ( 18, 19, 60, and 88 mins.) Larnach 75 mins. Bone scored the visitors consolation from the spot in 82 mins.

Enough I Say
