Craig Hinchcliffe joined the club from Elgin City for a fee of £11,000 in July 1995, and quickly established himself as the clubs Number 1. He was on the bench when the club gained their promotion from Division 3, having lost his place to Craig Wight, but had re-established himself, and was instrumental in helping the club to achieve Division 1 status. His outstanding performances between the sticks in the two seasons in the higher league attracted the attention of bigger clubs, and Hinchy left the club during the summer of 2003 to join St Mirren to the disappointment of many supporters of Arbroath , myself included, to whom he had become something of a legend.
