Harp ( Dundee ).

advert for a Forfarshire semi with Harp

were the original representative of the Irish community in Dundee formed in 1879. For the first Scottish Cup tie between the two clubs, Harp and their followers travelled to Arbroath by special train, and the replay attracted a crowd of 5000. Harp were expelled from the SFA in1894 for non payment of guarantees to visiting clubs. The committee then claimed to have disbanded, but in essence re-emerged later that year as Dundee Hibs ( not the same as the later side of the same name ). A ploy that enabled the former club to continue playing, and just a year later ( 1895 ), they reverted to the Harp, but subsequently did go out of business in 1906.

Oban. and Arbroath met only the once, a 3rd round tie in 1887/88. The Arbroath Guide on October 22nd 1887 reported      " Ever since the 3rd round drawings were made known speculation was rife as to whether the Arbroath club would undertake the long, tedious journey decreed them by the SFA. The executive after careful consideration of the pro's and cons wisely decided that it would not do to lie down tamely in the 3rd round, and consequently the official order was to go forth and conquer."  The team left on the 4.55 pm train on Friday and via Dundee, Stirling, and Dunblane arrived " At Tyndrum station we made the acquaintance of a heeland shepherd, who guessed we were the kick-ba fouks and at 5.30 am ( Saturday ) we were comfortably seated in the back parlour of the Crown."  The match was played at Dalintart Park in front of about 200 spectators, and despite going a goal behind, Arbroath responded to the captains stirring tones of " play up Arbroath " and won the match 5-1.
