September 12, 1885 Arbroath 36-0 Bon Accord
Where else could I start, but with this match. This was probably the most remarkable match played by an Arbroath side, and possibly the game many lichties fans would like to have seen.
The match records for this period relate that the rain fell heavily from early morning, but the park was free fromsurface water and otherwise in good condition.
Petrie started the scoring with two goals followed by another couple from Marshall. Munro added a fifth, and before half time another ten goals had been chalked up.
Half time Arbroath 15-0 Bon Accord.
The second half was a repetition of the first with another five goals being scored in the first 15 mins. and sixteen during the remainder of the match.
Arbroath - Milne ( goal ), Collie and Salmond ( backs ), Rennie and Milne (half backs ), Munro, Tacket, Marshall, Petrie, Crawford, Robertson ( forwards ).
Jocky Petrie was top scorer on the day with 13 goals.
Arbroath continued in the cup with a 2nd round home win over Forfar Ath.9-1, then a 3rd round victory against East End, by 7-1, before succumbing to Hibernian at Edinburgh 3-5.
A momentous cup campaign had seen 55 goals scored for only 7 conceded in 4 matches, 5 of those goals to Hibs.
Harp ( Dundee ) recorded a 35-0 victory over another Aberdeen team that day, while Strathmore ( Arbroath ) also defeated another Granite City side 7-0.
