Memorable matches No. 13

February 8 1975                     Arbroath 2-2 Celtic             Scottish League Division 1

What a marvellous game, in front of Arbroath's largest crowd of the season, and a fantastic result for the lichties against a Celtic side laced with internationalists.

Arbroath had, sensationally, taken the lead in the 9th minute when  a corner by Penman dropped perfectly for Bone to volley the ball past the Celtic defence and into the net.

Arbroath's first goal

Celtic fought back and equalised, and then went ahead through Dalglish three minutes from half time.

If the Celtic legions thought that the match was over the second half would cause them to revise their opinion. The match ebbed and flowed, mostly toward the Arbroath goal. but despite Celtic having most of the match, the resolute maroons stood firm. Alan Campbell in goal was having a great match, and with Joe Carson keeping Dixie Deans quiet, the scene was set for the grandstand finish which was witnessed by the lucky fans who were there. With only 15 mins. remaining, Arbroath produced some of their best football of the season, and when Bone whipped in a ball from the right to Brian Reid, he swivelled past McNeill, and crossed perfectly for Derek Rylance, who blasted the ball high past Hunter into the net.  A shot by Lynch three minutes from time came back of the post, but most fans who were there couldn't deny that Arbroath were worth a point.

The Rylance Equaliser

Arbroath - Campbell, Murray, Milne, Cargill, Carson, Smith, Sellars, Rylance, Bone, Penman, Fletcher. subs Reid and Buchan.

Celtic - Hunter, McGrain, Brogan, Murray, McNeill, Connelly, Hood, Dalglish, Deans, Callaghan, Wilson. subs Glavin and Lynch.

Derek Rylance seemed to like scoring against Celtic, as in a League Cup section 8 match in the 72/73 season, on August 28, he hit a "hat trick" against Celtic at Parkhead in a 3-3 draw.
