February 26 1977 Arbroath 1-1 Hibernian Scottish Cup 4th Round
After defeating neighbours Brechin City in the 3rd round, the draw paired Arbroath at home to Premier League opponents in Hibernian.
A fairly even first half saw both sides strive to gain the ascendancy, but very little real chances were made and the interval arrived with no goals forthcoming.
The second half had barely started, when a Bone header rebounded off the post and straight into Hibs keeper McDonald's hands. The Hibs number one was also called on to thwart efforts from Rylance and Bone. Just as it seemed Arbroath were fated not to score, Tommy Yule took a cross from Bone on his chest and hit the ball low past McDonald to put the home side ahead. The lead lasted 14 mins., when from a partially cleared corner, Blackley equalised for the visitors to force a replay at Easter Road.
Arbroath - Marshall, Follon, Kydd, Murray, Carson, Rylance, Fletcher, Cargill, Bone, Gardner, Yule. subs Fettes, and Mitchell.
Hibernian - McDonald, Brownlie, Schaedler, Bremner, Stewart, Blackley, Edwards, McLeod, Smith, Duncan, Scott. subs Fyfe, and Muir.
March 2 1977 Hibernian 1-2 Arbroath Scottish Cup 4th Round Repay.
After the draw on the previous Saturday, Arbroath traveled to Easter Road for the replay and things looked bleak when Marshall pushed a Duncan cross on to his own crossbar and McLeod reacted first to net in only the 9th min.
Hibs, though, failed to capitalise on their fortunate start, and Arbroath came more into it and drew level when a cross was deflected past McDonald by the head of George Stewart.
This spurred the lichties on and the small contingent of lichtie fans huddled in the Easter Road stand were overjoyed when Fletcher took a cross from Yule in his stride, controlled the ball, and hit a 20 yard left foot shot past McDonald into the net.
Hibernian - McDonald, Brownlie, Schaedler, Bremner, Stewart, Blackley, Edwards, McLeod, Smith, Muir, Duncan. subs Scott, and Paterson.
Marshall, Follon, Kydd, Cargill, Carson, Murray, Fletcher, Gardner, Bone, Rylance, Yule. subs McKenzie, and Mitchell.
On the way home we stopped in a pub leaving Edinburgh, and were treated to highlights on the telly. There were quite a few punters in the bar, and we didn't know what to expect, but the roar from the hostelry was immense when the Fletcher goal went in. They were all Hearts Fans!
