Memorable matches No. 18

January 9 1988                  Stenhousemuir 1-1 Arbroath              Scottish Cup 2nd Round

This cup tie would throw up an unlikely  hero for the Arbroath fans in assistant manager George Mackie, whose late strikes in the first two ties kept Arbroath in the cup.

The Ochilview pitch was heavy after the incessant rain which fell on the area on Friday and Saturday.

Arbroath kicked off, and in their first attack, Fotheringham was fouled by Buchanan, which earned the perpetrator  a yellow card. The home side had a good chance to go ahead in the 4th minute, but Jackson saved well from Walker. Arbroath were next to show when Fotheringham shot past after being played in by Richardson. Both sides were finding it difficult on the heavy pitch, but the Warriors got the breakthrough just on half time when Erwin headed a Walker corner towards goal and Elliot nipped in to hook the ball past Jackson.

Arbroath came out in determined fashion after the break but all their efforts seemed to be for naught, as Stenny resorted to kicking high balls up the field for their front men to chase, and keep the ball n the lichties half as much as possible. Jackson kept Arbroath in the tie with a great save from McAra. With three minutes remaining, and the lichties seemingly heading out of the cup, Richardson sent in a cross which was collected by Mackie, deputising for the suspended Paul Jack, and he curled a left foot shot into the net.

January 12 1988                              Arbroath 1-1 Stenhousemuir (aet).       Scottish Cup 2nd Round Replay.

Saturdays hero could only make the bench for this replay, but he was to be again instrumental in the tie.

Arbroath made the better start, and Richardson came close with a free kick after Kerr had been brought down. Burnside had the next try, and visitors keeper Keith rescued his side when he dived at the feet of Fotheringham to grab the ball. Richardson, and Kerr also had chances for the home side, but they couldn't convert them. With Stenhousemuir rarely seen as an attacking force it was hardly a surprise to arrive at the interval goalless.

After the break the lichties continued to dominate but were wasteful with their finishing. The Warriors made them pay,  and showed Arbroath how to do it when McAra timed a run to perfection, picked up a McIntosh pass and fired the ball past the advancing Jackson. Enter supersub Mackie,  who replaced Burnside, and as on the Saturday, with three minutes remaining after a scramble in the box, the ball broke loose and the sub fired the ball into the net. Extra time failed to resolve the tie, But Lex Richardson was sent off near the end for retaliation after being fouled by McCafferty.

Arbroath - Jackson, Mitchell, Jack, Philip, Burnside, P. Anderson, Forrest, Brannigan, Kerr, Fotheringham, Richardson. subs McKenna and Mackie

Stenhousemuir - Keith, Cairney, Gillen, Buchanan, McAra, Erwin, McIntosh, McCafferty, Elliot, Condie, Walker. subs  Quinn and Jamieson.

January 18 1988                                     Arbroath 1-0 Stenhousemuir.       Scottish Cup 2nd Round 2nd Repay.

played at Muirton Park, Perth.

After the two 1-1 draws , the fairly central venue of Perth was designated for the tie to be settled.

Stenhousemuir had the first chance when Elliot threatened to break away, but Jack stepped in and passed the ball back to Jackson. Both sides were finding it difficult on the hard slippery surface. In 18 mins though, Fotheringham brought out a good save from Keith with a shot from 25 yards. Forrest was next to try with a header, while a Beaton free kick got past the wall but was comfortably held by Jackson. Arbroath were on top but again were failing in front of goal.

After the break, Arbroath continued to press and were finally rewarded in 57 minutes. A long clearance by Paul Anderson was missed by Erwin, and Fotheringham gathered it, went past the keeper and shot home from a narrow angle. It was the first time Arbroath had been ahead in the tie. Kerr had a chance to make it two, but failed to control the ball. Stenny hit back, and we watched nervously as a shot from Thomson beat Jackson but came back off the woodwork. The match flowed back and forth, but Stenny couldn't find a "Mackie" to pull back a goal, and it was the lichties who would go on to face Dundee Utd. in the next round.

Arbroath - Jackson, Mitchell, Jack, R. Anderson, Mackie, P. Anderson, Forrest, Brannigan, Kerr, Fotheringham, Morrison. subs McKenna and Burnside

Stenhousemuir - Keith, Cairney, Gillen, Buchanan, Thomson, Erwin, Condie, McCafferty, Elliot, Beaton, Walker. subs  Quinn and McIntosh.
