January 26 1980 Arbroath 1-1 Aberdeen Scottish Cup 3rd Round
To an Arbroath side struggling in the 1st Division which had just suffered four defeats in succession, a cup draw at home to Aberdeen was hardly a tempting prospect.
By the end of this match though, Arbroath had regained some pride, and given their fans hope that, if the sort of form shown here was translated to league business, then survival might not be beyond them.
Aberdeen should have won by the amount of pressure they mounted, but the credit went to the home side for a backs to the wall fighting performance. Play went from end to end in the early stages with chances for both sides, with the best of them, a shot from Scanlon which hit the bar. Further chances fell to Considine, who headed against Lister's legs, and Strachan, who was felled by Kydd. Aberdeen did go ahead in 30 mins. when from a Strachan corner, the ball broke loose in the box to Archibald who beat Lister with a low shot. The Dons tried to kill the game off, but were caught shortly before the interval when a mistake by Considine left Stark in possession, and the winger fired in a shot which gave Clark no chance.
Aberdeen again took up the running on the restart and had much the better of the second half, but a solid defensive performance by the lichties secured a replay at Pittodrie.

The replay four days later saw Arbroath crushed 5-0 by a rampant Dons side. Goals from McMaster(3), Scanlon(50,67,and 86pen), and Archibald(62) were the goal scorers.
Arbroath, coincidentally were also drawn against Aberdeen, in the league cup 1st round. The first leg at Pittodrie, in front of a 9000 crowd, was won 4-0 by Aberdeen with goals from McGhee(6), Davidson(16), McMaster(26), and Jarvie(57).
The second leg seven days later witnessed a gallant Display form the home side. Although 4-0 down they took the game to the Dons, and went ahead when Wilson converted a cross from Gavine. They doubled their lead when Mylles headed home a cross from Wilson.
Aberdeen got a goal back when Harper's flighted shot went over Lister and into the net.
