Memorable matches No. 26

October 7 1972                                   Arbroath 3-3 Kilmarnock            Scottish League 1st  Division

This match was requested by Mike.

After winning promotion for the second time under the astute management of Albert Henderson, Arbroath had made a much better start in the 1st Division compared to the previous occasion. The league campaign had started at Falkirk with a 1-3 reverse, but successive wins against East Fife 1-0 at home, and Partick Thistle 2-1 away, followed by draws at home to Ayr Utd 1-1, and away to Dumbarton 0-0, saw Arbroath in a comfortable mid table spot.

Confidence was high then  for the visit of Killie. Arbroath made the better start, and the first real chance came when Rylance forged down the wing and crossed for Pirie to head goalwards. Stewart, at full stretch, blocked the header, and then saved the follow up from Sellars. Against the run of play Killie went ahead when Cook lobbed the ball over Marshall, who had strayed too far off his line. Arbroath hit back immediately when Milne carried the ball forward, and with the visiting defence retreating expecting a cross, the full back drove the ball low and hard under the diving Stewart.

Killie again went ahead due to the home side's generosity, when Marshall and Waddell both left the ball to each other, and Cook nipped in between them to score. Once again the lichties came back strongly, and after a goalmouth scramble, Cant squeezed the ball in.

The second half started in a similar pattern, and Arbroath went in front for the first time in the match, when Pirie slammed the ball in to the net from a cross from Milne.

The home side had further chances, but fine goalkeeping by Stewart kept his side in the game, and with two minutes remaining, McSherry crossed and substitute McCulloch headed in to win a point for the Ayrshire club, which they hardly deserved on the play.
