January 2 1974.                                   Motherwell 3-4 Arbroath.               Scottish League Division 1

Arbroath 'first footed' Motherwell and plundered two precious points for their trouble. Earlier in the season in September, the 'Well had left Gayfield 2-0 winners so this was sweet revenge for the lichties.

Motherwell opened brightly and went ahead in 29 mins when Gray crossed and Graham headed in. Five minutes before the break Penman crossed to the unmarked Sellars, who headed in the equaliser. A minute later Pirie shot home from 10 yards with the static Well defence claiming for offside, but the referee was having none of it, the goal stood to take the lichties in 2-1 ahead at the break.

Pirie put lichties ahead

Motherwell pressed from the restart, but when Rennie dropped a Fletcher cross Sellars was on hand to increase the visitors lead. The home side came storming back, and goals from Muir and Graham brought the sides level. Marshall was performing heroics in the visitors goal with some fine saves, but was helpless when Gray hit the bar but relieved when the ball was cleared. Arbroath replaced Penman with Walker in 86 mins, but it was Cant who won the match for the lichties when he netted in the final minute.

Peem Cant scored last minute winner
