Memorable matches No. 9

November 22 1969                  Arbroath 3-1 Albion Rovers           Scottish League Division 2

This match has probably been forgotten by most people, but it has been included for a most unusual reason. The day of the match was cold, and with non stop torrential rain, the conditions were atrocious to say the least.

Rovers won the toss and elected to play with the wind ( and rain ). It seemed as if it was the correct decision, as Ferrie dispossessed Cant and passed to McGovern who gave Hodge in the Arbroath goal no chance. This was the Rovers best spell, but Arbroath got back in the game when Millar equalised from a Reed cross. Half time came with no further scoring, but plenty of rain.

The teams appearance for the second half saw Arbroath run out in replacement dry jerseys, and Albion in the  lichties change strip ( vertical thin maroon stripes on white ).

Albion's second strip ?

With the wind behind them, the " maroons " took the game to the " candy stripes ", and went ahead through Cant, who scored from a Walker cross. Stirling added the third when he made his usual exemplary job from the penalty spot, after Cant had been pushed in the box.

Arbroath - Hodge, McKay, Hughes, Cargill, Stirling, Walker, Ward, Cant, Reed, Millar, Sellars. sub Newlands.

Albion Rvs.- Lamont, Currie, Hanlon, E. Halliday, Rogerson, R. Halliday, Coleman, Green, McDonald, Ferrie, McGovern ( Thomson ).

This left the Division 2 table looking like this

Cowdenbeath 16 10 2 4 34 16 24
Berwick 16 10 3 3 38 15 23

At the end of the season, Falkirk would be champions, with Cowdenbeath runners up. Arbroath finished fifth.
