September 17 1958      Arbroath 1-1 Partick Thistle        League Cup 2nd leg

Aggregate Partick Thistle 3-2 Arbroath

Arbroath had a busy schedule of matches to reach this quarter final, their first in the league cup. The month of August  involved playing Saturday and Wednesday in both the league cup and league. Arbroath then became the unlucky side to have to meet the section 9 winners in a play off. This meant a match on the Monday at Stair Park, which the lichties won 4-3, with Shireffs getting all the goals, and the second leg at Gayfield on the Wednesday, a 1-0 win, for a 5-3 aggregate win.

Arbroath's No 10 Fernie tangles with Blues defender

After the Saturday league match the Jags hosted Arbroath on Wednesday evening.

After being pressed back by the eager Thistle forwards for the first 15 minutes, Arbroath had a penalty claim when Baird palmed down a ball from Fernie in the box, but it went unseen by the referee. Two minutes later, after good work by Easson and Fernie, the formers shot was blocked on the line by Baird, and Shireffs following up, had a shot which was going wide until it cannoned off Thistle centre half Davidson and into the net. Jim Ferrie was injured a few minutes later, but elected to continue on the right wing ( no subs in these days ). Incessant pressure from the Jags failed to break down the resolute maroons defence before the break.

The second half followed the pattern of the first, with Thistle on the ascendancy. Further bad luck for the visitors saw Nicol injured. The two injured players began to take it's toll on the rest of the team, and with Thistle in command it was inevitable that they would score, and they did through Wright. Arbroath had fought bravely, but with only a few minutes left, Donlevy headed the winner from a McParland corner.

Seven days later the tie was reversed when Thistle visited Gayfield for the second leg.

Enforced changes for the home side saw Ferrie replaced with Shireffs, and Anderson came in on the right wing. For the visitors Martin replaced Mathers. With nothing between the teams, play was fairly even until in 21 minutes Smith ran in to score for the Glasgow side. Arbroath stormed back but couldn't find a way past Ledgerwood in the Thistle goal.

Arbroath carried on after the break in the same vein, and it was the lichties turn to put the pressure on Thistle. They eventualy found a way past the visitors defence when Nicol bustled in a corner from Sharp, after Ledgerwood fumbled the cross. Try as they might Arbroath couldn't find a second goal to take the tie into extra time, and went out of the competition.

Arbroath - Anderson played at number7, with Shireffs moving to 10 to replace the injured Ferrie.

Thistle - Martin for Mathers.
