Airdrieonians joined the Scottish League Division 2 in the 1894/95 season, and were promoted to the 1st Division in 1902/03. In their most successful spell, they were league runners up in four consecutive seasons from 1922/26, and also Scottish Cup winners in 23/24. They never reached these heights again, but did appear as a finalist on a further 3 occasions. They left their Broomfield ground and shared with Clyde for a few years before building the Shyberry Excelsior Stadium, or New Broomfield as it became known. The cost of building meant the club went into substantial debt, and after going into administration, the club folded in the summer of 2002, with huge debts. They were replaced in the league by Gretna.
