Memorable matches No. 11

November 11 1972                      Arbroath 2-1 Dundee                Scottish League Division 1

It's always nice to beat your neighbours, but in 1972, it was especially sweet to defeat Dundee. Wins against the Dens park men were scarce for the lichties, indeed the last win against them, with the possible exception of Forfarshire ties etc, was in season 36/37.

With the absence of Tom Cargill, and Jim Cant, the last minute signing of Ian McPhee from St. Johnstone was a godsend. He covered the field in a roving commission and constantly threatened the dark blues, who were playing in white.

Play was even early on and Arbroath's first effort came from the unlikely source of Jimmy Milne whose long range effort required two attempts by Allan to save. In 38 mins. Arbroath went ahead when the diminutive Kenny Payne outjumped the Dundee defence to head in a free kick  from Sellars. Both sides then had chances but the interval came with no more goals.

Two minutes into the second half, with the managers half time talk still fresh in their minds, Dundee equalised. John Duncan  nodding home a cross from Jimmy Wilson. With Dundee in the ascendancy, the able Marshall had to be at his best to deny the eager Dens park side.

Jocky Scott goal hero ?

Then in 73 mins., came the incident which settled the issue and ensured a win for the lichties. Thomson Allan, in the Dundee goal took a short goal kick to Jocky Scott, and the midfielder without looking up played the ball back. Incredibly the ball went wide of the Dundee custodian, who had came to the edge of his box, and rolled into the net. The joy on the terraces was unbelievable to say the least.

Despite Jocky Scott driving his team on in an effort to save the match, and atone for his unfortunate error, Arbroath hung on for 2 points, and left the park to a rousing applause from the fans.

Ian McPhee was superb on his debut, and was ably supported by Milne, Payne, and Rylance, but on the day all the players stuck to their task.
