Memorable matches No. 29

this match was requested by Allen.

Nov 16 1968                                      Aberdeen 2-2 Arbroath                       Scottish League 1st Division.

Arbroath found the going tough in the 1st Division, and had lost their two previous home matches 1-5 to Rangers, and 0-5 to Celtic, so a trip to Pittodrie was a daunting prospect for the league's newcomers. Arbroath had only picked up a solitary point from a 1-1 draw at home to St. Mirren in September, and this match was to procure their second.

Arbroath made the better start and Bruce could have opened the visitors account in the opening minutes, but hit his shot against Clark, in the home goal. Shortly after Jack was left with only the keeper to beat when Bruce cut the ball back to him, but the big centre shot past the post. Williamson saved well from Robb as the interval approached. Pierson replaced Finnie for the lichties just before half time.

Arbroath took the lead five minutes after the restart, when a misplaced pass from Craig fell to Jack and this time he made no mistake, and drove the ball into the net from 20 yards. The lead was short lived as the dons drew level when Robb put the ball into the net from a cross by Forrest.

Jack & Bruce ( the terrible twins )

The visitors again took the lead when Bruce chased a through ball and lobbed keeper Clark in 59 minutes. Again the home side pushed forward and Forrest put the sides level after good work by Hermiston.

Aberdeen - Clark, Hermiston, Shewan, Peterson, McMillan, Craig, Johnston, Smith, Forrest, Robb, Watt. Sub Buchan.

Arbroath - Williamson Booth, Riddle, Cargill, Stirling, Finnie, Cant, Jack, Reid, Bruce, Wilkie. Sub Pierson.

This was an excellent point for Arbroath, who hardly had a failure in the side. The "terrible twins" of the season before had both notched a goal, but the club were still anchored to the bottom of the league with two points.
