Memorable matches No. 5

September 7 1966           Arbroath 2-1 Third Lanark           Scottish League Division 2

September 14 1966             Third Lanark 2-0 Arbroath                 Scottish League Division 2

These two matches, I've included as they were the last  matches between the two clubs, as the "Hi-Hi" went out of business after the 66/67 season, a mere two years after being relegated from the first division. Their demise resulted from  a chairmen who wanted the club closed down and their Cathkin Park ground sold for housing development. The development didn't transpire, and the ground is today a childrens play area, although the outline of the ground is still visible with a bit of imagination.

The match in September was not the first meeting of the two clubs this season, as they had been drawn together, along with East Fife, and Morton in section 6.

The clubs first met at Gayfield for this season on Saturday, August 13 1966.

action v Thirds

Arbroath took the game to Thirds right from the start, and took the lead after 13 mins. when a neat move by Kennedy and Henderson saw Cant finish things off with a good goal. With Cargill and Pierson continually urging the lichties on , the home side increased their lead when they forced a corner, which taken by Cant, was hammered home by the onrushing Jack.

There was no further scoring, and Arbroath had gotten their league cup campaign off to a win, but they would ultimately end up second in the section to Morton.

Arbroath - Williamson, Cameron, Hughes, Kennedy, Stirling, Pierson, Henderson, Cargill, Jack, Cant, Wilkie.

Third Lanark - Russell, Connell, Baillie, Little, Harvey, McKay, Kinnaird, Stewart, Fyfe, Kilgannon, Henderson.

Attendance 1600.

The start of a season was a hectic time for players as during the early part of August and September clubs would play every Saturday and Wednesday.

The return meeting in the league cup was on Saturday 27 August, and resulted in a 1-1- draw.

As the dates at the top show the clubs played their two league matches only seven days apart, with Arbroath winning the first at Gayfield by 2-1, and Thirds the return at Cathkin Park by 2-0.
