Orion. an Aberdeen club who visited Arbroath in the Scottish cup 1st round in successive seasons, 1886/87, and 87/88. Scores of 20-0, and 18-0 to Arbroath suggest they presented little problems  to the home team.

Our Boys ( Dundee ). were Arbroath's first opponents in the Scottish Cup, at a park on Woodville donated by Colonel Dickson. The clubs met on a further two occasions, until in 1893 Our Boys, and East End amalgamated to form Dundee FC.

Perseverance. were another Dundee club who were to be Arbroath's opponents in the Scottish cup 2nd round of 1883/84. They presumably didn't turn up or scratched as Arbroath recorded a walkover.

Queen of the  South Wanderers. were drawn at home to Arbroath in the 4th round of the Scottish cup of 1886/87. The match was played at Dumfries and in extremely wet conditions on a sodden pitch defeated  the Lichties 8-2. It seems there is no connection with the present day club, as the Wanderers went out of business around 1900.

Renton. were one of the original clubs of the Scottish league in 1890/91, but were expelled after 5 games for playing Edinburgh Saints, a club suspended for professionalism. There was a suspicion that Renton were also a professional club ? They regained their place the following season, and continued as a league club until resigning in 1897/98 to be replaced by Hamilton. They were one of the giants of the early football years, contesting five Scottish cup finals. They were runners up to Queens Park in two finals, 1874/75 and 85/86, and to St Bernards in 1894/95. They won the cup twice defeating Vale of Leven 3-1 in 1884/85, and Cambuslang 6-1 in 87/88.

They played at Tontine Park, and after their resignation from the league they slipped from their former lofty position into obscurity.

Rob Roy. were drawn to play Arbroath in the3rd round of the Scottish cup in 1880/81. Rated as the " champion club of Perthshire ", their visit coincided with the opening of Gayfield and consequently the match was doubled up as an opening for the new ground, and a cup tie. The match was played on October 23rd 1880, and  Arbroath ran out 2-1 winners.

South Western. were a Glasgow club who regularly competed in the Scottish cup in the late 1870's and early 1880's, and it was in this competition that the clubs solitary meeting occurred, in the 1879/80 4th round in Glasgow. A 4-0 win for the home side ended Arbroath's interest in the cup for that year.

St Bernards. were an Edinburgh club who joined the league in1893,  and remained as a league club for the following 40 seasons. They had four home grounds during their league career, Royal Gymnasium, Logie Green, Tynecastle Park ( while building work was going on at their ground ), and the Royal Gymnasium Grounds.               St Bernards closed down in 1942, and didn't reform after the war.

St. Clements. a Dundee club, who were considered to be "the best in the East of Scotland". Arbroath were due to play them in the 2nd round of the 1878/79 Scottish cup, but the statistics record that Arbroath received a walkover, presumably because St Clements didn't turn up. The clubs had played a 0-0 draw seven days earlier at Baxter Park, Dundee, but there is no indication that this was the first match of this tie, or most likely, a friendly.

Strathmore ( Dundee ). were another Dundee club, indeed Strathmore was a popular name , with a club of the same name recorded in Arbroath, and possibly others around at around the same time. The clubs met on two occasions, both in the Scottish cup, with Arbroath having home advantage in both cases. In the 3rd round in 1879/80, Arbroath recorded a 6-1 victory, and in the 2nd round of 1887/88 the score was 3-1 in favour of the maroons.

Third Lanark. were a club with a distinguished history, who went out of business in the summer of 1967. They were members of the inaugural Scottish league in 1890/91, and  league champions in 1903/04 season. The Scottish cup was won by them on two occasions, in 1888/89 they defeated Celtic 2-1 in a second match after the first was protested ( Thirds won that 3-0 ), and in 1904/05 they added the scalp of Rangers, beating them 3-1. In addition they were also runners up  four times as well as being league cup runners up in 1959/60, after defeating Arbroath in the Semi final 1959. They played at Cathkin Park in Glasgow.

Vale of Leven  were another of the early giants of Scottish football. They won three Scottish cups, 1876/77 beating Rangers 3-2, after two 1-1 draws, 1877/78 defeating Third Lanark 1-0, and1878/79 when Rangers refused to replay after a 1-1 draw, and the cup was awarded to them.

Vale of Leven Cup Winners

They were runners up four times and competed in the first two years of the league championship, dropped out until 1905/06, and after falling into the 3rd Division in 1924/25 and playing there for one more season they disappeared from the league records, but continuing to compete in the cup for a few years. This Dunbartonshire club still exist as a junior club, and play at Millburn Park, Alexandria, on the same ground they occupied as in their glory days.

Not mentioned in these results is what should have been the first meeting of the two clubs in the 1880/81 Scottish Cup 4th round. The Arbroath Guide records that      "Owing to the fact that the Vale had choice of grounds, and naturally preferring to play on their own ground, it has been decided to give them a `scratch`, that is, the Arbroath captain not being able to get a sufficiently strong team to go to Alexandria, andfearing to risk the reputation of his club, has resolved not to contest the tie, but to retire from the competition".

Vale of Teith  were to have been our opponents in the 1st round of the 1880/81 Scotish cup at Doune in Perthshire. They were described as "the  south of Perthshire champions", but no account of the game is recorded, although Arbroath continued in the competition, and it must be assumed that the Vale `scratched` and Arbroath then received a walkover.
