Raith finally evened the match in the 58th minute, when Conn scored from a header from a cross by Kerray.
In 76 minutes Leishman put Rovers ahead with a close range effort, after a shot from Kerray was blocked. The lead lasted barely a minute, as Brown netted after a Quinn shot had rebounded back from the keeper.

It was Gayfield for the return a week later. The match had a slow start, the first 20 minutes producing little in the way of excitement for the fans. After this the match became more spirited, and despite both teams having their chances, no goals were scored.
The second half saw both sides striving to gain an advantage, and it fell to the visitors, in the 63rd minute, when Mochan scored with a header from a Kerray free kick. Arbroath equalised in 74 minutes, when Brown started a move with a pass to Shirreffs, who moved forward and crossed to Easson who headed goalwards, and Brown who had made a great run following the play headed in. With no more goals being scored and the two sides level at 3-3, extra time would be required. ( no away goals rule in these days ).
Arbroath took the game to the Rovers, and 5 minutes into the extended period, Brown put them in front with his second goal of the evening. Thereafter the home side dominated the first period of extra time. The second half saw Rovers throw everything at the lichties, and despite Urquhart hitting the bar and a last minute penalty claim, there was no more scoring.
