This was the first season in the Scottish league for Arbroath, a new era for the club.

The newcomers got off to a flying start with a 3-1 victory at home to Johnstone F.C., followed by an away 0-0 draw with St. Bernards of Edinburgh,and a 1-0 home win over Bo'ness, before incurring their first league defeat at Bathgate.

At the end of the season, the Lichties finished in 16th place with 33 points from 38 matches, well behind champions Alloa Athletic, with 60 points, but seven points better off than bottom club Clackmannan.

In the Scottish Cup, Arbroath were drawn away to Clydebank, and a goal by Thomson earned a replay at Gayfield, which was lost by 0-1.

After a bye in the Forfarshire Cup, Arbroath faced Montrose at home in the semi final. The match was drawn 2-2 with goals from Farquhar and Thomson. The replay was also a 2-2 draw, this time with Farquhar scoring twice, a toss of a coin fell in favour of the Links Park side for the second replay, and they defeated Arbroath 2-0 to advance to the final.
