After 10 years in the league, Arbroath had came close to moving up to the 1st Division on only a single occasion, with a 3rd place finish in 1928/29 behind Dundee Utd and Morton.
It might have been hoped that this would be their year, but alas no. The campaign was probably best remembered for the Scottish Cup 1st round victory over Aberdeen at Gayfield. Two goals from Harry Oliphant gave Arbroath a 2-1 victory over their 1st Division opponents.
The victorious team against the Dons was
Kelly, Fordyce, Benvie, Farquhar, Sinclair, Duff, Lowe, Boath, Jarvis, Oliphant, Stewart.
Their reward was a tie at Shawfield against Clyde. A solitary strike for the 'Bully Wee' was enough to defeat Arbroath.
Arbroath finished well behind champions East Stirling, and promotion would have to wait, but not for so very long.
