1934/35

first Arbroath side to gain promotion to the 1st Division.

This proved to be Arbroath's finest season so far in the league. A slow start with 4 defeats in the first 5 league matches saw Arbroath languishing in second bottom spot, and promotion looked light years away, but 7 straight wins catapulted the club up to fifth at the start of November. The good form continued as the team moved into second in December, and they maintained a place in the top four until a 4-0 win over Dumbarton at Gayfield clinched promotion to the 1st Division.

Other matches played by the club were a Dewar Shield* semi final on August 15th against St Johnstone, which ended in a 0-0 draw. The replay was won by the Perth club 4-0. The same club defeated Arbroath 1-0 in the Scottish Cup 1st round at Muirton Park in January.

The lichties did record victories in the Forfarshire Cup, 2-1 (Brand, Lowe) against Forfar at Station Park, and 3-1 (Duff 2, McNab(pen)) v Brechin at Gayfield in the semi final. The final was held over to the following season, due to the two Dundee clubs,  who had still to play their semi.

* The Dewar Shield was competed for by the winners of the Aberdeenshire, Forfarshire, Perthshire, and Stirlingshire cups. The winners were proclaimed 'champions of the northern counties'. It was competed for regularly between 1899 and 1946, then less regularly to the 70's until it petered out.

Arbroath had qualified by beating Dundee Utd in the previous season's final.
