Promotion Winners April 1972

Arbroath started this season with a Dryborough Cup away match at Airdrie 1-2 (Walker). The lichties had qualified for the tournament by virtue of scoring 80 league goals in the previous season. (The four top scoring teams from the two divisions qualified).

Pre season friendlies followed at home to Walsall 2-2 (Payne, Sellars), and Elgin City 2-0 (Payne 2), before finishing runners up to Partick Thistle in their league cup section. The Jags would go on to win the trophy defeating Celtic 4-1 in the final.

In the league Arbroath pushed for promotion right from the start of the season, and were seldom out of the top four throughout the campaign. This, despite the transfer of promising young midfielder Tommy Walker to Airdrie at the end of September for the fee of £16,000.

The club were going well in the league when manager Henderson made the astute signing of Billy Pirie from Huntly in February. The striker was instrumental in helping the club to win promotion, with 9 goals to his tally in the final two months of the season.

Had Arbroath recorded a victory on the last day of the season at Dumfries, then the championship flag would have been flying at Gayfield at the start of the next season, but instead it went to Dumbarton on goal difference, but it would be 1st Division football again at Gayfield next season.
