1965/66

After taking over the reins at Gayfield three seasons previously, and guiding the club to a 3rd place finish two seasons before, promotion was again a realistic prospect for Albert Henderson's Arbroath side in this season.

The season curtain opener was the League Cup, and Arbroath disappointed, finishing bottom of their section.

 Fortunes were better in the league and the club were top of the table by November and hopes were high, but in the second half of the season Arbroath fell away badly and by the end of the season had slipped to 6th.

 It would be another two seasons before Albert Henderson would lead the club to the first promotion of his reign.

Other matches played by the club were a Scottish Cup tie against Cowdenbeath which took three matches to decide. The first at Gayfield finished 2-2 ( Wilkie and Jack. ), and the replay four days later at Central Park 1-1 (Cant ). A third tie was then played at neutral Tannadice, which resulted in the Fife side winning a five goal encounter by the odd goal. Arbroath's scorers in this match were Sanderson, and Henderson. One other match was a friendly against Inverness Clachnacuddin on a free Saturday in April which the club lost 1-4 ( Henderson ) to the Highland league outfit at Gayfield.
