On the resumption of the game after the close of hostilities, Arbroath were placed in 'B' division, by which the 2nd Division was known until 1956/57. The club took 13 seasons to once again grace the top league.

Arbroath's stay in the 1st Division was the shortest possible, only the one season, but it showed the club the standard required to stay in the top flight.
